No screenwriter could’ve drawn this up better.
The 2026 NBA Playoffs are kicking off with a heavy dose of nostalgia and high stakes. The first round is starting with a heavyweight bout as LeBron James and the Lakers prepare to face Kevin Durant and the Rockets. Legends on both benches, generational pride on the line. But the atmosphere in Los Angeles right now is less celebration, more damage control.
While the Lakers secured the No. 4 seed with a solid 53-29 record, the mood in L.A. shifted instantly following that nightmare game in Oklahoma City. Losing Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves to Grade 2 strains just as the playoffs begin is a massive blow. Neither is expected back this round. Lakers’ coach JJ Redick has been characteristically blunt: both players are out “indefinitely”. Just like that, the team that spent a season building something real watched its two most dynamic playmakers limp into an uncertain postseason.
Houston enters as the No. 5 seed, but they’re coming in healthy and favored. With Durant leading the way and Alperen Şengün anchoring a top-five defense, the Rockets are looking to capitalize on L.A.’s thinned-out rotation.
