The creator of what is already considered a recent history anthem, Not Like Us, and a cultural icon of Los Angeles, Kendrick Lamar, has been the first person to come to mind as a potential main act for the opening ceremony of the grand Olympic Games ever since the city was announced as the host. His Super Bowl halftime performance and success at the Grammys have only fueled these hopes.
Today, the news is that Casey Wasserman, chairman of the 2028 Olympics organizing committee, confirmed in an interview with Associated Press, that Lamar is indeed being considered. “He is truly an L.A. icon, so I think it would be a pretty fair bet that Kendrick will be involved in the Olympics in Los Angeles in some way”, Wasserman stated.
The confirmation of Lamar as the main act at the vernacular Olympics is not yet part of the committee’s plans, but what is certain is that the event will be treated as the symbolic and material rebirth of the city, following the devastating fires last January. “The rebirth, the rebuild, maybe reimagining L.A. 2.0, and the Olympics as a catalyst for all those things, we think is really part of our ethos,” said organizing committee chairman Casey Wasserman.
Will we get to see Kendrick perform Not Like Us with thousands of people singing along under the glow of the Olympic torch? It’s still early to tell, but it definitely seems clear that there’s a strong interest in making it happen…
