99 Cents Only Stores, known and loved for its wide variety of products at just 99 cents, has announced it will close all 371 U.S. locations. This move marks a significant and sad change for many who have long relied on the chain for affordable shopping options. The company’s liquidation is set to begin today, April 5.
The decision to shut down all 371 stores comes after the company faced several challenges. Mike Simoncic, the Interim CEO of 99 Cents Only Stores, said in a statement, “Unfortunately, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, including the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting consumer demand, rising levels of shrink, persistent inflationary pressures and other macroeconomic headwinds, all of which have greatly hindered the Company’s ability to operate. We deeply appreciate the dedicated employees, customers, partners, and communities who have collectively supported 99 Cents Only Stores for decades.”
Founded in Los Angeles by Dave Gold, 99 Cents Only Stores expanded from a single shop into a major discount retail chain with 371 stores located in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.
When the chain opened its first store in 1982, Gold celebrated the grand opening by selling television sets for 99 cents (the equivalent to $3.23 in 2024) to the first 9 customers, drawing over 300 people. This inspired other stores to launch their own 99-cent TV sales in the area.
During the liquidation sale that begins today, shoppers can expect a wide range of merchandise at reduced prices, from household essentials and groceries to seasonal decorations and gifts, while supplies last. These are the 99 Cents Only Stores in Los Angeles:
