Idyllwild, California, is a tiny unincorporated mountain community in the San Jacinto Mountains. It sits about a mile above sea level, with quick access to pine forests, hiking and biking trails, and dramatic rock formations.
California.com included Idyllwild on its list of the best places to see fall foliage. It cited forests of oaks and maples that turn vivid reds and oranges in autumn, especially in Humber Park.
From its golden retriever mayor to its arts-hub reputation, here’s a closer look at this underrated Southern California escape.
Visiting Idyllwild in the fall
Idyllwild experiences all four seasons: snow in winter, wildflowers in spring, warm and arid weather in summer, and colorful foliage in fall. The best fall colors usually peak from late October through mid-November.
Dozens of nearby trails range from easy walks to strenuous climbs, and the area also supports rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, and camping. You can go leaf-peeping at Humber Park and along the trails at the Idyllwild Nature Center, including the Idyllwild Park Trail
Idyllwild is about 110 miles east of Los Angeles, roughly a two-hour drive depending on traffic. The most scenic route follows I-10 to Banning, then Highway 243 south into the mountains.
More about Idyllwild and Mayor Max
The Cahuilla people lived in this part of the state for thousands of years before settlers arrived in the late 19th century. As new roads improved access, Idyllwild became a popular summer getaway and developed a reputation as an arts enclave, hosting festivals and even film productions. The Art Alliance of Idyllwild and the Idyllwild Arts Academy continue that legacy. The surrounding San Jacinto Forest Reserve, protected from development, has helped preserve the town’s rustic charm.
Then there’s the mayor. Because Idyllwild is unincorporated and has no official human mayor, Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends (ARF) held a mock election fundraiser in 2012 open to dogs and cats. A golden retriever named Max (Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller) won but died after nine months in office.
Mayor Max II, also a golden retriever, took over in 2013, served nine years, and became an international celebrity. After he died in July 2022, Mayor Max III took over and continues the tradition, attending community events and spreading goodwill.
