Downtown L.A. is getting a major new arts destination designed by legendary architect, Frank Gehry.
The Colburn has announced that its new 100,000-square-foot expansion will officially open on September 25, 2027, bringing a huge new concert hall and dance center to Grand Avenue.
The opening celebrations will begin with a gala concert inside the new 1,000-seat Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall.
The following day, September 26, will bring a free community celebration with a ribbon-cutting, performances throughout the campus, inaugural dance performances, and a grand finale concert.
What’s coming to the new Colburn
The new building will include:
- A 1,000-seat concert hall designed in the round
- A new Dance Center with four professional-sized studios
- A 100-seat Studio Theater
- Indoor and rooftop gardens
- New rehearsal and performance spaces
- An outdoor stage
The Kohl Hall will become the permanent home of the Colburn Orchestra and will also serve as a new Downtown L.A. home for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra starting with the 2027–28 season.
The opening festival will feature performances by Colburn students and faculty, guest artists, visiting ensembles, and other performing arts organizations.

Another Frank Gehry landmark
The new Colburn building will add another Gehry-designed landmark to Grand Avenue, joining the nearby Walt Disney Concert Hall.
The building will also stand alongside some of L.A.’s biggest cultural institutions, including The Broad, MOCA, and The Music Center.
Its exterior will feature Gehry’s distinctive design and a bright pink metallic finish known as Pink Kandi.
Construction is expected to be substantially completed in summer 2027, with the Dance Center opening in August before the official September celebration.
