In 1857, fifty German-American families in San Francisco decided to escape the crowded streets and build a sun-drenched winemaking utopia. These shareholders were carpenters, musicians, a bookbinder, and even a poet! They each pooled $750 for the ultimate agricultural startup.

These visionary city-dwellers hired George Hansen, a brilliant surveyor, to prep the land. Hansen purchased 1,165 acres of sagebrush and cactus near the Santa Ana River—a landscape the locals considered utterly useless. He laid out a master grid of lush vineyards and a central village, all protected by a phenomenal “living wall.” His crew planted 40,000 willow poles that took root, growing into a massive, impenetrable barricade to keep wild cattle out.
A thriving new neighborhood
By 1859, the vines were heavy with fruit, and the families finally traveled south. Because everything was divided equally, they simply drew numbers in a lottery to claim their beautifully prepared plots. For twenty-five years, this utopian experiment blossomed into California’s largest vineyard. You can almost taste the rich, dark fruit just thinking about it (and the celebratory clinking of glasses).
Disaster strikes… but Anaheim fights back
The viticulture dream took a sudden turn in the 1880s when a mysterious plague swept through the valley, choking off the vines completely. But a community built by musicians and mechanics is nothing if not resilient. Instead of giving up, these colonists pulled up their roots and planted a brand-new crop—Valencia oranges! You can still visit George Hansen’s iconic wooden cottage today, perhaps grabbing a fresh, citrus-infused pastry nearby to celebrate the ultimate California pivot.
