“Houston, we have a problem.” The classic 90s film Apollo 13 is back in theaters once again, and this time it’s on the big, big screen. Apollo 13 was originally released in 1995, and this year it’s being re-released to IMAX theaters on Sept. 19 to commemorate its 30th anniversary. (The actual Apollo 13 mission marked its own anniversary earlier this year when the failed moon excursion turned 55.) This year’s re-release will be the first time the full version of Apollo 13 is shown in IMAX.
Apollo 13 tells “the dramatic true story of the heroic actions needed to bring a three-astronaut crew safely back to Earth after the Apollo 13 space mission suffered catastrophic mechanical problems en route to the Moon.” The film was directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris, earned nine Oscar nominations, winning for Best Sound and Editing. The cast won the SAG Award, with Ed Harris also taking home Critics’ Choice and SAG honors.
