They’re our equivalent of the northern lights and one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the region… Bioluminescent waves can be seen every year along SoCal due to the algae bloom phenomenon, peaking from mid-spring to early fall.
Many people come to snap photos, camp, and even surf on these mesmerizing waves that look like they’re straight out of a Disney movie. But this time, we’ve got an even better, more original, and immersive way to explore the magical glowing waves.
The Ocean Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Dana Point, will host its popular Bioluminescence Night Cruises this summer along the Orange County coastline. During the cruise, you’ll experience the sea glowing with drifting organisms and get a firsthand look at the nighttime food chain in action, including squid, fish, and more.
Just a heads-up: bioluminescence levels can vary, but the experience is always breathtaking. Be sure to book your spot quickly, as dates are limited and tickets sell out fast.
