Big Bear Lake is one of California’s best nature destinations, and there are dozens of ways to enjoy it all year round. But did you know about this small lakeside park on its southern shore?
Boulder Bay Park is a scenic and family-friendly landscape offering spectacular views of the lake and charming outdoor activities. This part of Big Bear Lake is known for its distinctive granite rocks rising out of the water, resulting in great photo ops.
With a small walking trail, gravel paths, covered pavilions, and open grassy areas, this underrated park area is a tranquil space to relax and take in the alpine scenery.
Making the most of Boulder Bay Park
The small lakeside park covers only about 3 acres of land and is easily accessible from Big Bear Boulevard. Visitors can take advantage of amenities including picnic tables, a fishing pier, covered pavilions, and grills, and there is a small beach area for sunbathing and kayaking.
Big Bear is quite the year-round destination, and Boulder Bay Park is no different. The large grassy lawns are popular for lounging in the summer and spring, but transform into an expansive snowy landscape in the winter, where families can have snowball fights and go sledding.
Visiting Boulder Bay Park
Boulder Bay Park’s small size makes for a charming and intimate environment, but it’s first-come, first-served and can get crowded at peak times and on weekends. The parking lot has about 20 spaces which fill up quickly, so it’s worth going early, especially on a busy day.
The park is pet-friendly and has clean public restrooms, and propane barbecues are permitted. Paved and gravel paths make it accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, and walkers. If you’re planning to go kayaking, just be advised that watercraft must first be inspected and permitted through the Municipal Water District.
