Los Angeles Chef Cara Haltiwanger created Calabama to share some of her Southern comfort food in California. Her pop-up restaurant was often found at local events, but that all changed once the pandemic hit. Now, with the help of a rope and a bucket, Haltiwanger serves her toasted cheesy egg sandwiches safely from four stories up.
Her innovative sandwiches have become a local favorite and even a hit amongst celebrities. So much so that they were featured on Jimmy Kimmel―and the iconic Halle Berry herself has stated it’s one of her favorite breakfast sandwiches.
It’s really no surprise to us how popular her sandwiches are. They’re packed with bacon, eggs, cheese, grilled onions, and avocado, then toasted to perfection on a warm skillet. Each bite is perfectly balanced with all the ingredients. It’s definitely the ideal way to start a Sunday morning.
Haltiwanger also has her own Calabama hot sauce that adds a nice kick to the sandwich. The bottle has “Keep Comin’ Home” written across it. In her own words, it means “Keep going back to the place that makes you the happiest. The kitchen with my family is that place for me, but it’s different for everyone. Find yours, and keep going there.”
Calabama’s delicious sandwiches and creativity have truly brought joy to her community, and that’s something that certainly feels like home to us.
All orders for Calabama are made through a ticketing system every Thursday. The link can be found in her Instagram bio! Heads up, time slots often fill up and sell out―so grab a spot while you can. Pick-ups happen on Sundays between 10A.M. to 2P.M.
In case you miss out on the Thursday slot, Calabama also does in person pop-ups. Follow Calabama on Instagram for updates.
