Like the backdrop of an old fairy tale, this California town seems straight out of a vintage Disney movie. With its serene streets, cozy gabled houses, and flowers filling the air with fragrance, this place feels as magical as its sunsets over the ocean.
Carmel-by-the-Sea, besides having one of the most charming downtowns in the country, is also considered the friendliest town in California, at least according to World Atlas.
Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel-by-the-Sea was founded as a retreat for artists and writers in the early 20th century. The town has preserved its storybook architecture and minimal street lighting, which adds to its magical atmosphere.

But what exactly makes it friendly?
It all boils down to Carmel’s several and peculiar traditions that enhance its charm. For example, there’s no home mail delivery, so residents collect their mail at the post office, creating casual gatherings that foster a strong sense of community. Dogs are welcome almost everywhere, from shops to restaurants, making it one of the most pet-friendly towns in California. Clint Eastwood, one of its most famous mayors, also helped shape its nature-focused, small-town character.

Homes here aren’t allowed to display numbers; addresses are identified by names instead. And with few streetlights, the town glows under the stars at night, giving it a dreamlike quality. On top of that, Carmel is also home to the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, known for its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife.
