It’s official – California has more UFO sightings than any other state in the United States. Whether you’re a hardcore believer or you want to believe, UFOs remain one of the most enduring mysteries in the skies. (After all, it’s in the name – Unidentified Flying Objects.)
A new study from Action Network analyzed UFO sighting reports from all 50 U.S. states to find out where you’re most likely to witness something unexplainable. And California’s UFO sighting numbers were out of this world! Thanks to the widespread use of smartphones, UFOs are now being captured on video more frequently than ever, bringing even more attention to these mysterious sightings. Plus, July 2nd is World UFO Day, so maybe it’s a good time to step outside and look up to the twinkling skies.
California’s UFO Sightings
Technically, California didn’t make the list for the best odds of seeing a UFO. But this is only due to the high population in the state of California. As the most populous state, it didn’t make the list of “The Best States to Spot a UFO,” but it did score an impressive 16,826 total UFO sightings. The report stated that California’s UFO sighting numbers were almost double the next highest number of reported sightings and blew “the other states out of the water!” And there are so many eerie first-hand UFO sighting tales around L.A. to prove the point.
Of course, there are so many other awe-inspiring reasons to look to California skies. The mystical “Buck Moon” will light up L.A.’s night sky next week, and it’s a full moon like no other.
Summer is the perfect time to head out of the city to go camping and search for celestial sightings. But even if you stay closer to home, there are so many perfect places for stargazing right here around Los Angeles.

What methodology did the study use?
Action Network looked at UFO sightings across all 50 states and crunched the numbers to see where you’re most likely to spot something strange in the sky. The study analyzed key factors like:
- Data from National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC). Reports were filtered and manually compiled by U.S. state to determine the number of UFO sightings in each location.
- The study calculated the odds of spotting a UFO per 100,000 capita in each state, and then converted figures to American Moneyline Odds.
- The study also looked at search volume per month per 100,000 capita to reveal the most “UFO-obsessed” states.
