Few date ideas feel as timeless as a walk through a beautiful garden. There’s something about wandering slowly through greenery, stopping to admire a blooming flower or a quiet, shaded corner, that lends itself naturally to romance. It’s no surprise gardens have inspired countless proposals, first dates, and anniversary trips over the years. But not all gardens are created equal when it comes to romance. Some are simply beautiful. Others are designed, intentionally or not, to feel like something out of a love story. About two hours from Los Angeles, there’s a garden that falls firmly into the second category, and it recently earned recognition to prove it.
That garden is Lotusland, tucked into the hills of Montecito. It was recently named one of the world’s most romantic gardens by Gardens Illustrated.
💍 A history built on love
Lotusland’s founder, Madame Ganna Walska, was no stranger to romance. The Polish-born opera singer, born Hanna Puacz in 1887, married six times over the course of her life, and divorced just as often. After a lifetime of reinvention across Europe and America, Walska finally found her most lasting relationship, not with a person, but with a garden.
In 1941, encouraged by her sixth husband, Walska purchased a 37-acre estate in Montecito, originally intending to build a spiritual retreat for Tibetan monks. That plan didn’t last. Walska spent the next 43 years, until her death in 1984, pouring everything she had into the gardens.
The estate wasn’t always called Lotusland. It began as a commercial plant nursery in the 1880s, later becoming a private residence known as “Cuesta Linda.” After divorcing Bernard in 1946, Walska renamed the property Lotusland, inspired by the lotus flowers blooming in its ponds, a flower considered sacred in both Indian and Tibetan tradition.
🌿 37 acres, 20 gardens, and 3,800 plants
Spread across the 37-acre estate are 20 themed gardens, home to more than 3,000 plant species. Highlights include:
