There’s something magical about train travel, especially when it takes you back to the golden age of the 1950s. Back then, trains were glamorous floating lounges, made of polished wood, glass, and fancy leather. Now, Californians can step into that world again, but with a modern and ultra-luxurious twist.
The Philadelphia-based startup, Lunatrain, has officially launched private ultra-luxury railcars that attach to regular Amtrak routes along the West Coast. The service debuted just last month and is bringing a “private-jet-level” experience to iconic train journeys across the region.
The company outfits restored railcars with modern, high-end amenities. Think glass dome ceilings for panoramic views, plush leather seating, a full dining room with fine china, a media room with a bar, and five private bedrooms, including a main suite with its own shower. Each trip includes a dedicated chef and steward, and up to six guests can book the entire car.
How California’s luxury train ride works

The service doesn’t operate its own trains; instead, it acts as a booking marketplace for privately owned railcars. These restored luxury cars get attached to regularly scheduled Amtrak trains, meaning you’re riding the same route… just in a completely separate, ultra-private space.
The experience has been described as “above first class,” more comparable to chartering a private jet than booking a standard train ticket. Right now, travelers can book the 12-hour Coast Starlight journey between Oakland and Los Angeles or the 36-hour California Zephyr trip from Emeryville to Denver.
California’s luxury train ride price

As expected, a luxury train ride doesn’t come cheap. The 12-hour Coast Starlight trip starts at $10,000 for the entire car, while the 36-hour California Zephyr journey costs $18,500. But, surprisingly, despite the steep price tag, the inaugural trips sold out almost immediately.
Bookings are made directly Halloway, which coordinates the private railcar operators and handles the logistics. If demand continues at this pace, these railcars could become one of the most exclusive and scenic ways to travel through California.
