The California Department of Motor Vehicles unveiled a new design for driver’s licenses and identification cards on October 1, 2025.
This is the first major change to the design since 2018, when the REAL ID star was added in the top right corner.
Here’s a closer look at the new design and some details to know for your next renewal.
New driver’s license and identification design effective Oct. 1, 2025
The DMV released the below sample image of the new card design, which now has “California” written in all caps with imagery of redwood trees and California poppies.
The previous card design, which changed in 2018 with the REAL ID, featured an outline of the state, sailboats, and a forty-niner panning for gold.
Prior to that, the card debuted a new design and security features in 2010.

“The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires.”
New security features
The new card includes enhanced anti-counterfeit features and security elements.
These include a new digital security signature on one of the barcodes, with California being one of the first states to add this feature. There will no longer be a magnetic strip on the back of the card.
Renewing your license
The DMV recommends using its online services to start the renewal process before resorting to an office visit. According to the latest on the DMV website, you may renew your license within 90 days of its expiration date.
Card fees remain at $45 for a driver’s license and $39 for an identification card.
