While summer usually means sunshine, heat, and swimming, that doesn’t mean these activities we love are limited to the dreamy beaches nearby. Sometimes, a quick inland escape to the mountains gives us the same vibe, but with calm, crystal-clear, and refreshingly cool waters.
Thanks to its majestic mountains, clear waters, and endless collection of trees, June Lake has earned the nickname “California’s Little Switzerland.” And just one quick Google search is enough to see why, the resemblance is undeniable.
During these hot months, the lake’s sparkling waters and sandy shores invite visitors to swim, paddleboard, or just take in the peaceful views. And by the time fall comes, the golden aspens add another layer of breathtaking beauty, enhancing the alpine vibe that has earned June Lake its iconic nickname.

Nestled in a glacial valley and surrounded by dramatic alpine peaks like Carson Peak, the scenery mirrors the charm of the European Alps. June Lake lies at 7,621 ft elevation, about 300 miles north of Los Angeles. The lake itself spans approximately 1.2 miles long by 0.6 miles wide, with a maximum depth of 168 ft.
During a weekend getaway, visitors can hike scenic trails like Parker Lake or the more challenging Fern and Rush Creek trails. On the lake, you can swim at the sandy beach, kayak, paddleboard, kitesurf, or fish for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout via the two marinas.

Wildlife lovers can spot mule deer, marmots, and even bald or golden eagles, while birders enjoy ducks, herons, and mountain chickadees. Summer chairlift rides at June Mountain offer panoramic mountain views and alpine hikes from the summit. It’s a perfect combo of adventure, nature, and relaxation.
In the summertime, June Lake becomes a hidden alpine oasis, offering crisp mountain air, cool clear waters, and postcard views without the coastal crowds. Its laid-back vibe, swimmable beaches, and scenic trails, make it an ideal warm-weather escape.
