Looking for something a little different to do this September? Camélia is inviting Angelenos to celebrate Japanese food, sake and culture with two special events.
From learning how to roll your own sushi handrolls with the restaurant’s sous chef to sipping sake alongside visiting Japanese brewers, there’s something for both food lovers and curious beginners to enjoy.
🍣 Learn to make sushi handrolls
On Sunday, September 13, Camélia Sous Chef Yuki Hayashigawa will teach guests how to make handrolls from scratch.
The two-hour class will cover everything from preparing sushi rice to sourcing and slicing quality fish. Guests will then make their own handrolls with madai, smoked masu, negitoro and ume kyuuri shiso, paired with sake, wine and spritzes.
Everyone will also leave with a bottle of Camélia’s house nikiri shōyu and a recipe card to recreate the experience at home.

🍶 Meet Japanese sake brewers
Then on Thursday, September 24, Camélia will host a casual Sake Social — Brewer Patio Party!
Three brewers from Japan—Nanbu Bijin, Amabuki and Mitsutake—will be on hand for an evening of mingling and tasting. Guests can sample 10+ sakes, enjoy light bites and meet the brewers behind the bottles.
The evening will also feature a Japanese calligraphy demonstration, with personalized bottles and cards available. Favorite sakes will be available to purchase and take home.
