When people think of Coachella Valley, they usually picture music festivals, palm trees, and fancy resorts. But behind the scenes, something much more meaningful is happening, and it could help tackle California’s housing crisis.
A local nonprofit called Lift to Rise is leading the charge. Back in 2018, they set a big goal: help build 10,000 affordable homes in the area by 2028. The idea is simple, give more people a chance to live in safe, stable homes without having to spend most of their income on rent.
So far, they’re making serious progress. Over 9,300 homes are already in the works. Some are still in the planning phase, while others, like Aloe Palm Canyon in Palm Springs, are under construction. That project includes 71 one-bedroom apartments for low-income seniors, complete with a gym, laundry room, and shared spaces to help build community.
What’s even more impressive? Lift to Rise isn’t doing this alone. They’ve teamed up with over 70 partners, including local governments, developers, and community groups. Together, they’ve created a $44 million fund to support new housing and built a data tool to keep everything on track.
