It’s finally happening! Construction walls have just gone up around Hollywood’s iconic Cinerama Dome as part of a long-awaited restoration project that will bring the historic theater back to life.
A major Hollywood theater restoration
Alamo Drafthouse announced in July that it would restore the Cinerama Dome in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, alongside the redevelopment of the neighboring former ArcLight Hollywood complex. Both venues are aiming for a 2028 reopening.
The project will transform the former ArcLight complex into a 14-screen Alamo Drafthouse, complete with dine-in movie experiences, special screenings, premium auditoriums, and even karaoke rooms.

The Cinerama Dome will keep its original identity
Meanwhile, the Cinerama Dome will keep its original name and identity. Plans include preserving its famous curved screen, mid-century modern design, and traditional movie theater experience. It will once again host 70mm screenings, major premieres and special film events.
When will the Cinerama Dome reopen?
First opened in 1963, the Cinerama Dome has been closed since 2020. Now, after years of uncertainty, the first signs of construction are offering a glimpse of a long-awaited Hollywood comeback.
