Deep in Southern California, about 40 miles east of San Diego, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is one of the region’s best places to experience the fall season.
California State Parks listed it among the top 10 state parks to visit in the fall out of 280 destinations throughout the state, as the black oaks turn a beautiful golden yellow color each fall. “The change of the foliage colors of the various trees during the season makes it a must-visit,” they write.
The park makes for a compelling day trip with numerous trails to choose from, traversing a range of landscapes including colorful mixed forests, woodlands, meadows, and creeks.
Cuyamaca Rancho State Park protects more than 100 miles of trails across 24,700 acres, many of which are shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians.
At 6,512 feet, Cuyamaca Peak is also the highest point in San Diego County, offering an unbelievable view of the Pacific coastline to the west and neighboring Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to the east. You can make the 3.5-mile hike from Paso Picacho to reach the summit and see the views for yourself.
Visitors can book a $40 campground at Paso Picacho or Green Valley, which has a creek running through the middle of the camping areas. Consider combining your visit with a trip to nearby Julian, one of California’s best destinations during the apple season.
