Daft Punk fans, mark your December calendars! For the first time ever, the anime film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem will hit theaters around the globe on December 12.
While select segments of the film aired as music videos in the early 2000s, full screenings have been rare. Interstella 5555 premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003. Earlier this year, Daft Punk surprised fans by streaming Interstella 5555 on Twitch to mark the anniversary of their breakup.
This one-night-only release offers a rare chance to see the entire feature-length anime set to the French duo’s iconic album, Discovery, remastered for the big screen.
What to expect at Interstella 5555‘s 2024 one-day theatrical release
Originally released as an animated sci-fi music film in 2003, Interstella 5555 was a collaboration between Daft Punk and legendary anime creator Leiji Matsumoto, with direction by Kazuhisa Takenouchi. The story follows an intergalactic pop band that gets abducted by a villainous human with plans to exploit their talents.
The anime is known for its striking visuals and compelling narrative, told entirely through the album’s music and animation. After the main film, audiences will be treated to a curated selection of Daft Punk music videos from celebrated filmmakers, such as Spike Jonze, Warren Fu, Michel Gondry, and Roman Coppola.

Tickets officially go on sale November 13 at 6 a.m. PT, with showings available at select theaters across the globe. Though the full list of venues haven’t been officially shared, some L.A. theaters have already shown preliminary listings with showtimes around 7:00 and 7:30 p.m. on December 12:
