Los Angeles artist ZSORRYON has unveiled a new mural titled [BURN] outside The Elysian Theater on Riverside Drive that’s gaining attention with lovers of all things 90s. The piece is a rendering of the cult MTV series, Daria, a hit 90s animation with themes that still resonate today.
The mural features three central figures from the series:
- Daria Morgendorffer – still deadpan as ever behind her round glasses
- Jane Lane – her artsy best friend with that unmistakable black bob
- Helen Morgendorffer – Daria’s hard-working mom with the always-on energy she’s known for
From suburban detachment to urban energy
The show Daria was all about dry humor, social commentary and critique, and that infamous detached “I’m observing everything from a distance” energy. [BURN] preserves that sensibility but drops it into a more visually charged atmosphere.
It ends up feeling like Daria got pulled out of suburban monotony and dropped straight into the chaotic middle of modern L.A.
The artist behind ZSORRYON
Before becoming a recognized force in mural painting, ZSORRYON was known as former professional basketball player Rod Benson. After a 12-year international athletic career, he transitioned into visual art, drawing from global travel, cultural observation, and personal reinvention.
His work now spans cities including Los Angeles, New York, and Seoul, and has also appeared in television productions such as The Rookie and Grand Crew. Across mediums, his approach blends character-driven storytelling with bold color and subtle commentary on contemporary life.
With this latest piece, ZSORRYON reintroduces nostalgic characters from our youth and recontextualizes them so they feel relevant again in a fresh contemporary setting.
