In another strange twist of news regarding California’s national status, a new petition named Denmarkification is calling for California to join Denmark. And shockingly, it’s quickly gaining popularity. The petition has now collected over 225,000 signatures and counting.
The Denmarkification campaign also aims to crowdfund $1 trillion to purchase California, but the petition is currently focused on gathering signatures rather than collecting donations. There’s no official confirmation if the Denmarkification campaign was started by hopeful Danes or disgruntled Californians.
The Last Laugh
The humorous online petition is satirical, but that hasn’t stopped both Danes and Americans from taking notice and signing up. The petition comes as a counter offer to the continued efforts by the current Executive Branch of the United States to purchase Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
The Denmarkification website states, “Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.’ Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality.” However, the website also has this disclaimer, “This campaign is 100% real… in our dreams.”
Free and Independent?
And of course, this isn’t the first petition for California to leave the United States. At the end of last month, there was a renewed interest in California becoming a “free and independent country.” It seems Californians now have a few choices when it comes to their national status.
Name Changes
Naturally, the petition proposes a few name changes. California will become New Denmark, and Los Angeles will transform into Løs Ångeles.
But if California were to become part of Denmark, only one city would be the natural choice for its new capital. The Californian city of Solvang has already been dubbed the “Danish Capital of America.”
However, other changes could find some Californians disgruntled. Disney fans should be prepared for Disneyland to be renamed as Hans Christian Andersenland. But promises of bringing “hygge to Hollywood” could appease many.
