Forget the typical spooky season plans. This fall, you can watch one very drunk actor attempt to tell the story of Dracula while a cast of sober performers desperately tries to keep the show on track.
Drunk Dracula is coming to Los Angeles for the first time this September. The theatrical comedy experience opens September 11 at The Hotel Cafe and runs through November 14 for a limited spooky season engagement.
The show comes from the Drunk Shakespeare Society, an immersive theater company known for mixing professional acting, improv, audience participation, and a whole lot of alcohol.
What exactly is Drunk Dracula?
The premise is exactly as chaotic as it sounds. One professional actor takes five shots of whiskey before attempting to perform an epic retelling of Dracula. The rest of the cast remains sober and has to improvise around whatever happens next.
The show combines theater and improv with plenty of audience interaction. No two performances are exactly alike. The cast has to react in real time to the unpredictable antics of the drunk performer.
You can expect plenty of classic Dracula drama, plus pop-culture references, improvisation, and plenty of opportunities for things to go completely off the rails.
Drunk Shakespeare is finally coming to L.A.
The Los Angeles production marks the Drunk Shakespeare Society’s first L.A. show after becoming a popular immersive comedy experience in cities including New York, Chicago, Phoenix, Houston, and Washington, D.C.
The company is launching a multi-production Hollywood residency at The Hotel Cafe with Drunk Dracula kicking things off during spooky season.
“Los Angeles has always felt like the natural next chapter for The Drunk Shakespeare Society,” said David Hudson, CEO of Brass Jar Productions. “It’s a city that embraces live entertainment, celebrates storytelling and isn’t afraid to have a little fun.”
You don’t need to know Shakespeare
Despite the company’s name, you don’t need to be a Shakespeare expert to enjoy Drunk Shakespeare.
The company was founded in 2014 by Scott Griffin and David Hudson and describes itself as a “drinking club with a Shakespeare problem.”
Its shows take classic literature and turn it into something much more accessible. Expect recognizable stories mixed with comedy, improvisation, pop-culture references, and plenty of audience interaction.
The company has expanded beyond Shakespeare, too. Its productions include Drunk Romeo & Juliet, Drunk Dracula, Drunk Christmas Carol, and Drunk Pirates.
Is the cast really drinking?
Yes, they are! The alcohol isn’t just part of the name.
But the company says it takes the safety of its performers seriously. Cast members follow strict drinking guidelines and are monitored during and after performances. Performers are also provided with safe transportation after shows.
Audience members aren’t required to drink either. The company encourages guests to know their limits and plan a safe ride home.
The comedy and audience interaction are the real stars of the show, so you can definitely have a good time without drinking.
