The iconic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood is closing for the summer.
The theater updated its website with the news, citing “technical upgrades” for the temporary closure.
“The Egyptian Theatre will close temporarily to undergo technical upgrades beginning June 8,” reads the announcement. “We look forward to inviting you back this Fall.”
No exact date has been announced.
The historic theater is famous for hosting the world’s first major Hollywood movie premiere in 1922. Netflix purchased the theater in May 2020 and it reopened to the public in November 2023 alongside the nonprofit American Cinematheque.
Today, the 516-seat cinema is one of the few theaters across Los Angeles to still screen films in 35 and 70 mm. It also regularly hosts Netflix events and premieres.
Programming is still scheduled through Sunday, June 7, 2026. The theater typically hosts the Ultra Cinematheque 70 Fest every summer, which celebrates 70mm filmmaking classics with select screenings. It’s unclear where – or if – the festival will return in 2026.
