It seems like something out of a science fiction movie, but flying taxi services could soon be a reality in Los Angeles. Archer Aviation aims to make these sci-fi fantasies come to life as soon as 2026. The Santa Clara, California based company mission is to “unlock the skies, freeing everyone to reimagine how they move and spend time.”
What are the benefits of an electric air taxi?
The company’s goal is to quickly get travelers to their destinations without having to endure hours of the frustrating traffic jams that L.A. is unfortunately famous for. Archer claims that the multi-propeller electric air taxis are much quieter than normal helicopters. Plus, Archer hopes to ultimately make the electric air taxi services affordable for most L.A. residents. But at the initial service rollout, the cost will likely be comparable to premium ride-hailing or taxi services.
When will the electric air taxi services launch?
Archer Aviation is aiming for a 2026 launch in Los Angeles ahead of the upcoming World Cup. The electric air taxi service has announced that it plans to use existing infrastructure around Los Angeles. Several of the locations include University of Southern California, Los Angeles International Airport, Hollywood Burbank Airport, and SoFi Stadium. The aircraft company doesn’t want to build new infrastructure. They simply want to utilize the existing facilities across Los Angeles that are not currently being used.
Have the electric air taxis been approved for use?
The Federal Aviation Administration recently cleared the electric air taxi company for testing of its aircraft. Archer Aviation stated that they are “currently working through certification with the FAA and other global aviation authorities to ensure our aircraft can safely integrate into the airspace, so we can begin flying passengers in the world’s largest cities.”
Are electric air taxis the future of transportation?
Archer Aviation asks “Why sit in traffic when you can fly above it?” They promise to “revolutionize the way people move around cities” with hour-long commutes reduced “down to mere minutes.” The future of travel could be radically different if all of Archer Aviation’s goals are achieved.
