Thank the mighty ube for the mauve morsels at FrankieLucy’s Bakeshop.
You’ll be tickled pink – or at least, purple – at this endearing Silver Lake bakery.
Specialising in delicious desserts from the Philippines, it’s the result of a mouthwatering collaboration between Found Coffee and Crème Caramel, and first opened on Sunset Boulevard back in December 2016.
FrankieLucy’s not-so-secret ingredient is Dioscorea alata – better known as the ube or purple yam, after its fantastic colour. The vividly-coloured tuber has a sweet, gently-nuttly flavor that makes it perfect for all kinds of Instagram-friendly desserts. Just look at the action!
The ingredient makes its way into all kinds of delectable snacks: an upside-down ube pie, pavlovas, creme caramels, ice cream popsicles and icy horchatas.
New innovations make their way onto the menu, from time to time – last Christmas, their spectacular, electric purple Yule log had foodies’ hearts aflutter internet-wide.
Busy Angelenos will be pleased to know all of the above dishes are available on Postmates and Seamless, but if you find yourself in the neighbourhood, why not drop in? They’re open seven days a week, and you might even make some cute new friends…
They are currently only open for curbside pickup and delivery. You can order online and browse their delicious offerings here.
