The Echo Park Repair Fair is trying to mend a broken world – one repaired item at a time.
This Sunday, June 29th, from 10 am to 1 pm, head to Echo Park with all your household items that need a little extra love and restoration. Bring in your clothes, jewelry, small appliances and electronics, lamps, knives, and scissors for sharpening and small repairs. They’re even offering free lead testing for any vintage or secondhand kitchenware you might have. Plus, you can vibe out to live vinyl tunes from DJ Daisy Van Tassel.
What is a Repair Fair?
The Echo Park Repair Fair is part of the global Repair Café movement. These are community-run gatherings where people bring in broken household items, like lamps, textiles, small appliances, electronics, bikes, and more, and get help mending them for free with the guidance of volunteer “repair coaches.” These repair coaches work with you to mend your item. It’s not just about fixing the item. The aim is also to teach practical repair skills.
Why do Repair Fairs matter?
In addition to the empowerment of learning new skills, there’s a huge sustainability impact. Typically, 50–100 items are fixed at each fair. This extends the lifespan of goods and combats waste by diverting hundreds of pounds from landfills. Plus, it greatly reduces CO₂ emissions from that waste. And of course, these events encourage community building. The fairs bring together diverse generations from the local community to share useful skills and foster strong connections.
Free Clothing Swap
Plus, this time the Repair Fair is also offering a free clothing swap! You don’t have to bring in clothes in order to participate. But if you do bring clothes, please don’t bring undergarments. And don’t bring more than 10 items of clothing in good condition.
Fundraiser for CHIRLA
While the event is totally free, the Echo Park Repair Fair will be holding a fundraiser for CHIRLA (Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles). CHIRLA is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit dedicated to advocating for the human and civil rights of immigrants and refugees. If you feel inclined to donate for their repair services, all funds raised will go toward helping L.A. immigrants.
How to Volunteer
If you have a useful skill that can help others, such as sewing, carpentry, electronics repair, knife sharpening, or shoe repair, you can volunteer to help at the fair. Simply fill out their Volunteer Interest Form here. Use your important skills to help your neighbors and help the environment. Every little bit helps.
