Found in Highland Park, Galco’s Soda Pop Stop is home to over 500 different types of soda. Since 1897, they’ve been quenching the thirst of Angelenos — and as you can imagine, this vintage cola shop’s history fizzles deep. If you’re looking for a taste of nostalgia, they’re sure to satisfy it.
The shop first opened its doors over 100 years ago in Downtown Los Angeles, and was then known as Galco’s Imported Grocery. During that time, it was owned by Galioto and Corto Passi. They teamed up with Louis Nese in 1940, who had a special connection with the shop since he was a young boy.
Years later, Louis was able to buy the store on his own, and moved the shop in 1955 where it currently stands today. Eventually, Louis passed down the business on to his son — John, who still owns the shop today. It was John who decided to expand the selection of sodas in 1995. Both out of passion but also in opposition to some of the bigger soda makers. He made the deciscion to uplift vintage and independent soda brands, and until this very day, Galco’s Soda Pop keeps his word.
They also invite folks to get their creative jucies flowing with their create your own soda experience! You’ll get your own 12oz bottle, and have the option to choose from a blend of tastes, increase your preffered amount of carbonation, and cap it yourself. They offer hundreds of flavors — like traditional tastes including cola, vanilla, orange, and strawberry. If you’re feeling daring, their more unique flavors include guava, pineapple, and habanero/lime.
You’re bound to work up quite the hunger becoming a cola chemist, and they’ve got you covered in that department. Behind their store is a beloved Italian deli which features thier local favorite Blockbuster Sandwich. In alignment with their values, they use fresh ingredients from small and local businesses.
As you can tell, soda isn’t the only thing this shop has up its sleave. They also have an extensive collection of brews and ciders. Whatever you’re craving, you can certainly sip back in time at Galco’s Soda Pop Stop.
