If you’ve ever wanted to try stargazing in Los Angeles but don’t own a telescope, there’s a tiny observatory in Monterey Park where you can look through a real telescope for free.
Tucked inside Garvey Ranch Park, the Garvey Ranch Park Observatory opens its doors to the public every Wednesday evening. This free weekly event gives Angelenos the chance to get a closer look at the night sky with help from local astronomy enthusiasts.
And unlike some astronomy experiences around L.A., you don’t need to buy a ticket or make a reservation.
Look through the telescope for free
The observatory is operated by the Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS), whose volunteers welcome visitors every Wednesday night from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
Inside the observatory is an 8-inch refracting telescope used for public viewing. Depending on the weather and who’s there, members may also set up additional telescopes on the lawn for informal stargazing sessions.
What you’ll see depends on the night, the weather, and what’s happening in the sky. You might get a close-up look at the moon, a planet, or other celestial objects visible that evening.
The observatory also occasionally hosts astronomy classes, science nights, and star parties throughout the year.
A little observatory with a long history
The observatory has been part of Garvey Ranch Park for decades. The facility originally dates back to the 1960s, when local amateur astronomers established an observatory with the city’s support.
Today, the observatory continues that community tradition through the LAAS, which operates the space and staffs its public viewing nights with volunteers.
The telescope and dome have also received upgrades over the years, including a new dome designed to support the observatory’s ongoing public astronomy programs.
And while Garvey Ranch Park is surrounded by the bright lights of the San Gabriel Valley, the observatory offers an easy way to experience a little bit of nighttime astronomy without leaving the city.
