Five months after the Getty Villa narrowly survived the Palisades Fire, the esteemed museum finally reopened in June to the delight and relief of museumgoers all over Los Angeles. Things are looking a little different now with limited hours and capacity, but it’s worth getting a ticket ASAP to see the impressive new exhibition, The Kingdom of Pylos: Warrior-Princes of Ancient Greece.
The Kingdom of Pylos: Warrior-Princes of Ancient Greece
The Kingdom of Pylos is the first major North American show dedicated to the Mycenaeans, who come from the ancient city of Myssenia in Ancient Greece. Visitors are invited to explore over 230 artifacts from the Late Bronze Age kingdom of Pylos, which was home to warrior-princes, palatial complexes, and rich burial traditions.
Displays include artifacts from the Palace of Nestor, including Greek tablets inscribed with the “Linear B” script, the earliest written form of the Greek language. Other items come from the grave of the Griffin Warrior, a tomb discovered in 2015 with remains of a Mycenaean warrior from 1450 BCE. The exhibition concludes with a focus on ten sites of the well-investigated Pylian kingdom, including burial goods from beehive-shaped tholos tombs.
Visiting the Getty Villa
The Getty Villa reopened on June 27th on a limited schedule to control traffic on the newly opened Pacific Coast Highway. There is a limit of 500 visitors per day, from 10-5pm between Friday and Monday. You can still enjoy free admission to the Getty Villa, but the parking fee remains at $25. Visitors can reach the museum via PCH, but not via Sunset Boulevard.
Visitors will see visible burn scars and reduced vegetation on the property, although the Villa’s main structures are still intact. Crews have been hard at work removing over 1,300 burned trees, deep-cleaning all indoor and outdoor spaces, and conducting inspections.
Make sure you reserve free tickets to The Kingdom of Pylos exhibition online.
