One of L.A’s most impressive art galleries is reopening but you’ll need an appointment.
Hauser & Wirth has maintained a rich array of online experiences worldwide during the stay-at-home order, through engaging online exhibitions (including Online Basel) most notably the work of eminent portrait photographer Annie Lebowitz. They have also run live Instagram events, virtual discussions and downloadable kid-friendly resources to keep us culturally satisfied and sufficiently socialized.
But, there is no substitute for re-opening physically. So yes the actual doors will be open and inside you will find some of the greatest artists of our time gracing the walls and filling the space with imagination once more. However, the gallery plans to do so with its customer’s safety concerns as a priority.
Safety will be maintained by taking appointments only, which you can book online here. Stacen Berg, Partner confirmed, “We are delighted to begin by re-opening our exhibition galleries by appointment, so that we can accommodate visitors in accordance with social distance practices.” And explained, “Our restaurant Manuela, a bookstore, a garden, and open-air courtyard, as well as our four indoor public exhibition galleries, are all connected, we must re-open them carefully and in gradual phases to ensure the safety of all.”
What is particularly exciting, is that there’ll be exhibitions devoted to the legendary Lucio Fontana, sculptor, painter and theorist behind ‘spacialism’, and August Sander the 20th-century German portrait photographer and documentarian. They had both debuted in February just weeks before the quarantine period, and have now been extended for our viewing pleasure.
Another delight to freshen things up- for those who had visited just before lockdown- is a new presentation devoted to the early paintings of the celebrated, inventive post-war artist Ed Clark opening mid-August 2020.
The gallery’s onsite restaurant, Manuela, will welcome back guests for dining starting 1 July, while continuing curbside pickup of seasonal comfort food. Contemporary art books and publications are available for purchase through ARTBOOK’s Book Shop web platform.
Hauser & Wirth may be under more demand for customers wanting to gain entrance, but the appointment system will maintain safety and give a sense of exclusivity and space with the art, an offering that in the modern world is not always afforded. Showing that additional health safety can even provide rather delightful silver linings.
