The National Weather Service (NWS ) has issued warnings for dangerous surf and potential coastal flooding as a powerful northwest swell impacts the region this week. Tuesday marks the peak of the high surf conditions, with hazardous waves expected to persist into the week.
Ventura County beaches are forecasted to see towering waves of 12 to 18 feet, while west- and northwest-facing beaches in Los Angeles County could experience surf between 8 and 12 feet. Beachgoers are urged to avoid rock walls, jetties, and other exposed areas as flooding is likely in beach roads and parking lots. High tide occurred at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday and will return at 5:35 p.m., increasing the risk of flooding.
The Ventura Pier, closed since Sunday due to high surf, will remain shut through Christmas Day as a precaution. The large west-to-northwest swell poses a danger to boaters, with breaking waves potentially overtopping sea walls and capsizing vessels near harbor entrances. Coastal residents and visitors should exercise extreme caution and stay informed as conditions evolve.
