When we think about safe places, our minds probably automatically associate this concept with living in a small town or suburban area. And that makes sense, because as we covered in previous articles, many of the safest places in California are exactly that: small and peaceful towns. But lucky for us, city lovers, we don’t have to move anywhere else to find safety.
The company SmartAsset has just shared a study comparing the 50 most highly populated cities in the country, evaluating variables such as violent crime rate, property crime rate, vehicular mortality rate, and several other metrics. The result? L.A. ranked high on the chart at position number two.
Among the 50 largest cities in the U.S., Los Angeles ranked ninth lowest for both violent and property crime rates when adjusted for population, SmartAsset Economic Analysis Director Jaclyn DeJohn told KTLA. Additionally, for every 100,000 residents, L.A. experienced 9.5 deaths from fatal car accidents and 23 deaths from drug overdoses. The city ranked 17th lowest in the study for fatal car accidents and 14th lowest for drug overdose deaths.
Topping the list is a West Coast city: San Jose, California. Ranking in the top 10 for every metric SmartAsset studied, San Jose recorded the third-lowest violent crime rate and the fifth-lowest property crime rate in the country relative to its population. Overall, the ranking of the safest cities in the U.S. looks like this:
-
- San Jose, CA
- Los Angeles, CA
- Fort Worth, TX
- Omaha, NE
- Virginia Beach, VA
- Las Vegas, NV
- Arlington, TX
