LA Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow has returned with larger-than-life animal lanterns placed in a phosphorescent environment of luminous trees and blooming flowers. See the displays at the Los Angeles Zoo now through Jan. 7, 2024, and read on for everything to know before your visit.
LA Zoo lights up at the nature-focused Animals Aglow, which is a nice departure from your usual kitschy Christmas light displays, although you’ll still enjoy a festive landscape at the Winter Wildlands with views of the “northern lights,” giant ice crystals, and snow-loving animals. This year’s display also depicts California native wildlife and a magnificent glowing desertscape with motion-sensing cactuses. The giant walk-in kaleidoscope and luminous swings are crowd favorites, especially for families.
Guests are invited to explore the abundant luminous lantern displays via a self-guided stroll lasting about 60 to 90 minutes. Bear in mind that Animals Aglow is separate from regular daytime zoo admission, and there will be no live animals on display for this special after-hours experience. The lanterns cover about half of the zoo property and are located mostly away from the animal enclosures so as not to disturb their sleep.
To keep you toasty and warm at the outdoor event, LA Zoo will have food and drinks available for purchase. In the spirit of sweet tooth season, we’re partial to the spiked hot chocolate and hot cinnamon sugar churros. But there are plenty of options to choose from for adults and kids alike.
There are several VIP offerings available at Animals Aglow including an ugly sweater night on Dec. 14 and a family New Year’s Eve celebration on Dec. 31, both of which include a delicious buffet dinner. There will also be a Pride Night on Jan. 4, where all guests can enjoy DJs and dancing in a fun and inclusive LGBTQIA+ celebration.
Tickets to LA Zoo Lights: Animals Aglow range between $29-35 for adults and $18-23 for children. Prices are highest during the holiday weeks of Dec. 15-23 and Dec. 26-31. The displays are closed on Dec. 16, 24, and 25, and the whole experience runs through Jan. 7, 2024.
