For the fifth year in a row, the Los Angeles Zoo is inviting guests to celebrate the memory of their beloved animal companions at the Beloved Pets Ofrenda, a vibrant and heartfelt tribute held in honor of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This touching display allows visitors to pay homage to the pets who’ve brought joy, love, and companionship into their lives.
Who’s Behind the Event
The L.A. Zoo is once again teaming up with Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education, an award-winning community art school serving Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, and East Los Angeles. The ofrenda at the Zoo’s Sea Life Cliffs was co-created by resident folklorist artist America Madrigal-Herrera, alongside Plaza de la Raza parents and students. This ongoing collaboration highlights the Zoo’s commitment to community partnerships and cultural celebration.
What is an Ofrenda?
An ofrenda, meaning “offering” in Spanish, is a traditional altar created to honor loved ones who have passed away. These colorful displays are adorned with photos, flowers, candles, and meaningful items that represent those being remembered. As a central part of Día de los Muertos celebrations, ofrendas reflect love, memory, and the deep connections that transcend life and death.
How to Participate
All L.A. Zoo guests are invited to contribute to the Beloved Pets Ofrenda. On weekends from October 4 through November 2, the Zoo’s Learning & Engagement team will be on-site from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help visitors add to the altar. Guests can print photos of their pets from their phones or draw portraits using the art supplies provided. The Zoo will also supply frames that participants can decorate and place on the ofrenda.
Even outside of staffed hours, the altar will remain open during regular Zoo hours, allowing everyone a chance to honor their furry, feathered, or scaly friends. The Beloved Pets Ofrenda beautifully blends cultural tradition with compassion, celebrating both Hispanic heritage and the bond between humans and animals.
