Although it’s not the Hollywood sign, the LAX letters are undoubtedly etched in the minds of the thousands of passengers who arrive (and depart) each day from one of the world’s busiest and most important airports. However, today it’s time to say goodbye to this iconic landmark… though only for a while.
According to KTLA5, the dismantling of the iconic sign currently at the airport’s gateway marks the next phase of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) modernization plan to upgrade roadways and reduce traffic congestion. The “X” will be removed this Thursday, starting the dismantling process, which will continue with the “A” and finish with the letter “L”.
LAX said in a news release that although the letters will be taken down from their current spot, they will later be repositioned to fit the new road layout and become part of the wider planned upgrades for the area.
The roadway project is a component of LAX’s larger Airfield & Terminal Modernization Program (ATMP), which is expected to be fully completed by 2030. Major areas of the airport will stay operational during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
