Of the many hidden gems in SoCal, without a doubt one of the most striking is this one. Maybe it’s because of its resemblance to typical Indian buildings, its size, or the peaceful vibe it gives off, but the Malibu Hindu Temple is probably one of the most unique spots that clearly shows just how eclectic California can be.
The complex was built in 1981, and it features two main temples: one devoted to Venkateswara and the other to Shiva, along with additional shrines for deities like Rama, Lakshmi, Bhoodevi, Krishna, and Hanuman.
Each shrine features pyramid-shaped towers known as gopurams, intricately carved by Shilpis with symbols and deities from Hindu mythology. These carvings reflect the style of the Shola dynasty, offering visitors a glimpse of historical Indian temple architecture without leaving the U.S.
But beyond its beauty, its impressive size, unique architectural style, and importance to the Hindu community, this temple is also famous for a rather curious visitor… None other than Britney Spears. As several media outlets reported at the time, in January 2006 the pop star visited the temple to bless her first son, Sean Preston Federline, who was about four months old. Sean was the inspiration behind one of Britney Spears’ most celebrated songs, Someday (I Will Understand).
Although the temple is, like any temple, primarily dedicated to religious practices, it’s open to anyone who wishes to visit. That said, you’ll need to enter without shoes and wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. If you’re going just to take photos or explore out of curiosity, remember to be respectful to honor the spiritual and religious practices of those who may be there.
