Looking for a beach day that feels like a quick getaway to the Mediterranean? This hidden pool in Laguna’s One Thousand Steps Beach, has all the charm of a European coastal escape, but here in SoCal. With its turquoise water, rugged cliffs, and golden sand, it’s easy to forget you’re still near the city…
The adventure starts with a staircase of about 250 steps (fortunately, the 1000 steps name is not a literal thing!), that takes you down through a shady tunnel of plants. It’s a peaceful walk that already makes you feel like you’re stepping into a secret spot.
Once you reach the beach, you’ll be welcomed by soft sand, dramatic rock formations, and the soothing sound of waves. If you walk to the left along the shoreline, you’ll find smaller tide pools hidden between rocky outcrops. These are best explored during low tide, as the area can be dangerous when the water is high.
To reach the pools, you’ll need to climb over some sharp, slippery rocks, so wearing shoes with good grip is a must. Look closely, and you might spot colorful sea creatures like starfish, sea urchins, mussels, and tiny crabs.
Once you get there, you’ll spot two main pools: one shaped like a rectangle and another perched on the edge of a cliff where waves crash dramatically, sending up sprays of water that add to the magic!
The beauty of this spot comes not only from its views, but also from how well it’s cared for. To help keep it that way, be sure to check the tide times before you go, avoid stepping on marine life, and pack out anything you bring with you.
