In March, Metro officially approved a route for the K Line extension through West Hollywood, in exciting news for those who have been following recent developments like the D Line Extension and the LAX/Metro Transit Center.
There is one rather large caveat: timing. Under its current funding plan, riders may end up waiting roughly 20–25 years before trains actually arrive.
Metro’s Board of Directors voted on March 26th to select the San Vicente–Fairfax alignment as the “locally preferred alternative,” a nearly 10‑mile underground extension that would carry the K Line north from Expo/Crenshaw through Mid‑City, Fairfax, West Hollywood, and into Hollywood.
The project promises up to 10 new stations and fast rail links to major destinations like Museum Row, Cedars‑Sinai, the Pacific Design Center, the Santa Monica Boulevard nightlife strip and Hollywood/Highland. Advocates say it could add close to 100,000 daily riders and knit together key job centers along the west side of the basin.
How can we get the K Line sooner?
Under Measure M, construction money for the Northern Extension does not fully arrive until 2041, and Metro’s own project page lists an anticipated opening between 2047 and 2049.
West Hollywood is trying to change that math by creating an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD), an effort that could pull the start of construction forward. But even that accelerated scenario depends on complex local and federal funding.
The West Hollywood coalition is calling on the public to get involved by signing up for email updates, joining public input sessions, and more.
