As of now, news on the shooting that took place on Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Monterey Park is still unfolding. In response to the tragic event, all Lunar New Year festivities in the city were canceled Sunday, January 22, 2023.
The community of Monterey Park has put together a vigil and memorial taking place on January 23, 2023 at 7 p.m. to honor the victims in front of Monterey Park City Hall. The City of Monterey Park has scheduled its own vigil for January 24, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring candles or flowers.
“The unimaginable happened in our community last evening and the City Council joins the community in expressing our shock and sadness regarding this horrible tragedy. We stand united together as we mourn, and our thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends during this difficult time,” said Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lo in a statement. “We understand our community is looking for answers. The safety of our residents is our priority and we remain committed in providing information as this investigation unfolds.”
The memorials are open to anyone wanting to mourn and express their grief. They have also put together a Survivors Resource Center at Monterey Park’s Langley Senior Center at 400 N. Emerson Ave., Monterey Park, CA 91754. There are mental health resources ready and available for anyone who needs support during this difficult time.
