A small town about four hours from Los Angeles just broke the record for the hottest monthly temperature recorded in a U.S. city. Needles, a town of 5,300 people on the edge of San Bernardino County, recorded an average of 103.2 degrees Fahrenheit for July 2024. Temps reached as high as 120°F during the day and well over 90°F at night.
Prior to Needles setting this new record, Phoenix, AZ had recorded the highest-ever average monthly temperature at 102.7 degrees in July 2023. That was the first time that a major U.S. city broke 100°F. In 2024, several more cities have joined the above-100 club: Palm Springs, CA at 100.0°F, and Blythe, CA at 100.7°F.
“Phoenix is happy to relinquish the record to Needles,” wrote the AZ State Climate Office on X.
Various U.S. cities regularly reach over 100°F in the summer months, but these temps are especially significant when affecting a more highly-populated area like Needles. The small desert city is a popular retirement destination, with over one-third of residents over the age of 65. Senior citizens are especially susceptible to extreme heat like this.
Every summer, it’s wise to protect yourself from extreme heat conditions, especially in roasting desert cities like Needles. If you have air conditioning like 88% of U.S. households, make sure you use it to keep cool at the height of the afternoon.
If not, there are a few other ways to lower the temperature in your home. You can try closing your window shades to prevent sunlight from entering; avoid using your stove and oven; and place a cool wet cloth on your wrists, neck, and temples. Otherwise, consider going to public air-conditioned spaces or seeking out nearby cooling centers. Always remember to wear sun protection and stay hydrated throughout the summer.
