Three decades after the legendary Self Destruct Tour, which took place between 1994 and 1996, Jonathan Rach, the official photographer during the concerts, announced an exclusive exhibition of rare images taken during that period. The photos capture the live performance of The Downward Spiral, regarded as Trent Reznor’s masterpiece and a musical milestone.
The exhibit, led by Behind the Gallery, will debut in New York City, while the L.A. show will take place from March 6 to 9 at 7615 W. Sunset Blvd, with the album playback on March 7 and Rach’s talk on March 8.
Jonathan Rach was not only the official photographer during the tour, but also the filmmaker behind the documentary Closure, which captures the concerts. The film portrayed the live performances as well as the band from 1989 to 1991. The Self Destruct Tour marks the first major concert series since the Pretty Hate Machine tour in the late ’80s.
As Rach exclusively told Rolling Stone, he hopes fans can experience the “energy of the images” and to be able “to get a sense of what it was like to be at the tour. I also hope the NIN community connects, and new friendships are formed from that shared bond of being fans of the music. It’s a celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Downward Spiral and the Self Destruct tour, and hopefully, the experience will be one to remember.”
