What do you get when you mix a summer nights with L.A.’s film culture? That’s right: a classic open-air drive-in where you can enjoy top screenings from the comfort of your car, just like in the old days.
And it turns out the oldest one around is just an hour away from the city.
The Rubidoux Drive-In Theatre has been lighting up nights in Riverside since 1948, making it one of California’s oldest drive-ins still in operation. It started as a classic postwar hangout and became a beloved local spot for movie nights under the stars.
After a brief closure in the ‘80s, it was brought back to life in the ‘90s and continues to show films on multiple screens today. While a few drive-ins opened earlier, Rubidoux is the only one from that era still standing. During the pandemic, it even had a comeback, proving that some old-school magic never fades.

The Rubidoux Drive-In may hold onto its vintage charm, but it’s also moved with the times, offering FM radio sound and Technalight digital projection for a crisp, modern viewing experience. In 2010, the theater also gave its snack bar, restrooms, and landscaping a refresh to keep things comfortable and welcoming. You can catch the latest movie releases without leaving your car, or set up lawn chairs and blankets for a laid-back night.
If you’re planning to go, try to arrive at least an hour early to grab a good parking spot and a clear view of the screen. Bring cash, since many swap meet vendors don’t take cards. And don’t forget to check that your car radio works, you’ll need it to hear the movie on the FM band. If not, a portable stereo with speakers will do the trick.
