The countdown to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games reaches a major milestone next week. On July 14—exactly two years ahead of the Olympic Opening Ceremony—the official application portal for Games-time volunteering will open to the public.
The organizing committee is looking to build an “LA28 Volunteer Crew” of roughly 60,000 individuals to power the world’s largest sporting events behind the scenes. Here is a breakdown of the upcoming application launch, the requirements, and available roles.
Application requirements for game-time volunteers
To qualify for an operational role during the Games, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Age: Be 18 years or older at the time of application.
- Language: Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Shift Commitment: Complete a minimum of 10 non-consecutive shifts (approximately 8 hours per shift) during either the Olympic period (March–August 2028) or the Paralympic period (August–September 2028).
- Location: Be present in person at an official U.S. venue city during the competition periods. While most positions are located in Greater Los Angeles, roles are also available in Oklahoma City, New York City, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José, and San Diego.
Volunteer role categories
Positions cover a wide range of responsibilities across the logistics and guest services pipeline. Volunteer roles fall into eight primary categories:
- Ceremonies & Experience (event production and guest relations)
- Operations & Driving (logistics, venue management, and transport)
- Sport & Medical (athlete support and specialized healthcare services)
- Technology & Communications (infrastructure, media, and broadcast support)
Candidate assessments and rolling offers will take place throughout 2027.
For individuals who want to get involved ahead of 2028, the LA28 Volunteer Program also features a separate community track. Active right now, this localized initiative connects volunteers with monthly environmental and social causes across Southern California.
