Southern California is getting its first overnight horror camp – and it’s opening up sooner than you might think….
Nightmare Rising, a haunt attraction based in Chico, California, is launching Camp Coffin Creek this August. Based around five slasher films, this “summer camp” is actually a 12-hour overnight horror survival experience.
“From the moment you arrive, you are being hunted,” the website reads. “Five slashers roam the grounds throughout the night. Your mission is simple: survive until morning. If one of the killers gets their hands on you, you are dead — eliminated from the Last Camper Standing competition. But death at Camp Coffin Creek isn’t the end of the night. Stay, compete in the games, watch the horror movies, make s’mores. You just won’t be the last one standing.”
How does it work?
Guests can arrive between 7 pm and no later than 10:30 pm. You’ll be assigned a tent at registration. “Then the night begins.”
There are three haunted attractions to survive:
- Zombie Survival Experience: Flight – “You will be issued a flag belt with three flags. Your mission: navigate the sewer system while zombies hunt you — trying to strip every flag from your belt. Make it out with at least one flag and you survive. Lose them all and you’re infected. Can you outrun what’s in the dark?”
- Zombie Survival Experience: Fight – “You will be issued a weapon and placed under the command of a Squad Leader. Your mission: eliminate the undead. The only way to kill a zombie is a direct shot to the head. Move fast. Stay together. And whatever you do — do not let them touch you. A single touch is all it takes to become infected. One wrong move and you’re one of them.”
- Terror in the Woods – “These woods are not safe. They never were. Enter deep into the trees where coyotes circle in the darkness and cannibal hillbillies have been waiting for fresh campers to wander in. There is no mission here — only survival. Not everything in the woods is a performer.”
Following the haunted attractions, the Survival Competition begins.
The official rules are as follows:
“Campers are divided into two teams. Throughout the night, you will battle for points, glory, and the title of Last Camper Standing. Participate in as many or as few events as you choose — the night is yours.”
The games include:
- Tug-of-War
- Blood Tag
- Hide and Seek
- Stab Stab Goose
- Gel Blaster Shootout
- Camp-Wide Scavenger Hunt
When the last game ends, one camper will be crowned. The Award Ceremony closes the competition and crowns the Final Survivor of Camp Coffin Creek.
And that’s not all. The Final Hours is the last event.
“Return to your tent. Breathe. The competition is over — but the night is not. Settle in for horror movies projected on multiple 25-foot outdoor screens, make s’mores around the fire, and spend the last hours of the night the way every great summer camp should end.”
