Pismo Beach has long been a favorite stop on Highway 1 or 101 for Californians looking to trade traffic for ocean air.
Now, the small beach town in SLO has a new title to add to its repertoire: Last week, Travel + Leisure named Pismo Beach as its Best Small Beach Town in America for 2026.
The magazine highlighted the town’s charming waterfront, which is lined with surf stores and souvenir boutiques, as well as its new luxury Pismo Point Resort and recently expanded Pacific Surfliner train service.
For L.A. travelers, the 8,000-person community makes for an easy coastal escape when traveling up the Central Coast. The town is about 3.5 hours north of L.A. by car, perfect for a quick road trip stop or a full weekend trip.
More than a classic beach stop
The 1,200-foot Pismo Beach Pier, which extends toward the Pacific from downtown, makes for a great place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, especially with an ice cream in hand. Watch out for whales, sunbathe on the soft sand below, or take a quick dip in the ocean. The nearby boardwalk keeps you close to restaurants and shops.
Some visitors also time their visit with low tide for a good tide pooling session at Shell Beach, particularly around Margo Dodd Park and Eldwayen Ocean Park. You can also head over to the 880-acre Pismo Preserve for more coastal hiking, cycling, and horseback-riding opportunities.
From November through February, Pismo Beach’s eucalyptus groves are also a famous overwintering site for thousands of monarch butterflies.
