When it comes to almost enchanted, magical landscapes, California has no shortage of examples… From purple beaches to ghost towns from the Golden Age of Gold, not to mention towering trees and giant boulders. But this spot deserves a special mention, as with the arrival of cooler temperatures it becomes the perfect destination to warm your body while waiting for summer to return.
A geological gem just under three hours from the city
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains and only a short drive from Bakersfield, Remington Hot Springs features three man-made pools seamlessly integrated into the riverside boulders overlooking the Kern River.
Back in the 1990s, local enthusiasts lined the pools with river rocks set in cement, creating a rustic yet charming atmosphere. Water cascades from pool to pool, with the hottest flowing into the first tub. Temperatures fluctuate with the seasons, generally ranging from 100 to 106°F.
According to Islands, many guests enjoy alternating between the hot pools and quick dips in the chilly river waters. The contrast is invigorating, but be careful as unseen currents can make the river tricky. If you’re unsure of conditions, it’s safer to stick to the pools on the riverbank.
Oh and, by the way, the water in the hot springs carries a sulfur scent, so you might smell a bit like eggs afterward…
Visiting Remington Hot Springs
Remington Hot Springs was once a very hidden gem, known mostly to locals and those who explored the Sierra Nevada. Recently, a TikTok video showcasing the spot’s beauty turned it into a viral sensation, drawing more visitors than usual. While it may be a bit busier now, it remains far quieter than other similar destinations in the region, offering a relaxing experience away from the crowds.
The best time to visit is in late summer or early fall, when the river levels are low. The hot springs are surprisingly easy to access via Highway 178, but the drive from Bakersfield will take about an hour without traffic. When you get to the highway, you’ll find a simple dirt parking lot and from there, the hot springs are just a short walk away.
