August 23, 2023 marks Kobe Bryant’s birthday — and Santa Monica is celebrating in style tomorrow evening.
In 2016 the City of L.A. declared August 24, 2023, as Kobe Bryant Day. This honorary day is in recognition of his achievements, philanthropy, and legacy in Los Angeles. In celebration of this day, his birthday, and the significance of Kobe’s role in culture — Santa Monica’s historic Pacific Wheel is set to light up with an array of Lakers purple and yellow patterns along with the numbers 8 and 24.
“August 24th marks a bittersweet day for basketball fans worldwide as they remember one of the greatest players to grace the basketball floor – Kobe Bryant,” shared Pacific Park on their site. “The Black Mamba, as he was affectionately known, left an indelible mark on the sport and the hearts of millions of fans.”
The spectacular light show will start right at sunset on Thursday, August 24, 2023, around dusk and will go on until 11:35 p.m. If you can’t catch this event in person, don’t worry. You can watch the Ferris wheel light up via the Pacific Wheel’s live webcam.
