Director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) returns with Sinners, a Southern Gothic horror where twin brothers open a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi, only to find a terrifying supernatural threat. Michael B. Jordan stars in what’s already being called one of the year’s most stunning films.
Sinners is currently scoring a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and if you’re a horror fan, this one’s not to miss.
The highly anticipated film was shot using high-resolution IMAX film cameras, making it ideal for the big screen. Coogler has said this format “means a lot” to him, describing it as “a beautiful way to watch the movie” and praising its immersive power.
Where To Watch Sinners In 70mm and IMAX 70mm Formats Around Southern California
Only 10 theaters in the U.S. are showing Sinners in the 70mm IMAX film format, and just two are in Southern California:
- Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood, 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, CA 91608
- Regal Spectrum Irvine, 500 Spectrum Center Dr, Irvine, CA 92618
Bonus for NorCal folks: AMC Metreon 16 & IMAX in San Francisco is also screening the film in IMAX 70mm.
This version uses 15-perf/70mm IMAX film, which allows scenes to expand vertically, filling the screen with a taller, more detailed image (up to a 1.43:1 aspect ratio). It’s the same large-format style favored by filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Coogler himself.
Coogler also worked with Warner Bros. to release a different rare format: 70mm 5-perf projection. Only five theaters in the U.S. are showing Sinners this way.
One of them is The Vista Theatre in Los Feliz. This historic venue is screening the full film in 70mm 5-perf, giving audiences another unique way to experience the movie, and you can get tickets at their site.
Can’t make it to a specialty screening? Sinners is still worth catching in theaters.
